New feature-length documentary: Eye of the Wind
a 65 min documentary film premiering Spring 2023
A Michigan aerial photographer stops piloting aircraft to explore the art of quietly capturing bird's-eye views without noisy propellers or burning fossil fuels. Eye of the Wind is an adventure in modern kite aerial photography—an art form and flight technology first invented in France during the late 1800s.
Unboxing is a short narrative dance film demonstrating the ability we all have to unbox the patterns within our lives that have been handed down to us by the patriarchal and cultural traditions within our modern societies. Click the link above to watch the film.
Photography: A personal focus of mine has been silently capturing images from the sky along with their raw, natural sounds—I take aerial photos and videos without noisy drones or manned aircraft. My new feature film — Eye of the Wind — documents my adventures as a kite aerial photographer. My kite aerial photo/video blog can be viewed here. A feed of my photojournalism work for the Manitou Island Transit can be seen here.
Film: The art of capturing and editing motion pictures arrived in my life around 1999 when my grandfather gave my family a small Sony digital camera. I remember being only able to shoot 15-second video clips on the 4 MB memory card as a teenager—when I received an 8 MB memory stick later that year, I was elated by the freedom of space. More than 20 years later, I continue to capture still and moving images—except now on 1 TB cards (250,000 times the memory I first had).
During the past two decades that spanned this era of advancing technology, I had the opportunity to study art and humanities at four institutions—including Northwestern Michigan College, Montana State University, Western Washington University, and Prescott College (where I funneled my experiences into a focus of environmental photojournalism). Woven into my history are several thousand hours of producing, filming, and editing a wide array of stories, sights, and scenes from across North America as well as Ethiopia.
One of the highlights of my career was having the opportunity to be a location cinematographer and advisor for the environmental documentary, Planet of the Humans. The film was produced by Huron Mountain Films and released by Michael Moore's company—Rumble Media—on Earth Day 2020. My complete list of clients includes:
